Mexico City is large, polluted & crazy - but this is what we all knew before. We have found that all of these do indeed hold true - However, it can also be quaint & colorful. This may especially be true when you only stay within the confines of one neighborhood/barrio.

Badass Barrio Burro |
Out of all of the places in this world, I couldn't honestly say that Mexico City has ever been on my list of 'must see' places. Luckily, in terms of travelling - I never stick to this 'list', but instead take advantage of opportunities as they arise with the common comment of 'why not?!'. So here we are in Mexico City visiting Emily's wonderful sister Marina (who lives here). We were warmly welcomed into the city by Marina & her husband Gerardo and for the last few days have been able to step into the life of a real housewife of Mexico City (a temporary title for Marina, who has just moved here and awaits her visa to begin work).

Looking down from the apartment at the tops of the market tents |
Marina's apartment is the perfect little observatory as it is one of the highest apartments in the vicinity with plenty of windows. We can spy on the streetlife and gaze out across the cement jungle. Just across the street there is a man that has a pig farm on his roof. Sadly - we watched as he cornered two of the poor little piggies & bagged their heads as he lead them away by their tails. Down the stairs they went to an unknown place..... within minutes we heard the unmistakable squeal of the little piggies as their destinies played out - the chicharron (fried pig skin) sellers waited for them on the street.

Mexico City Pig Farmer |
We have filled the days perusing the street markets; cooking wonderful traditional dishes; doing rooftop laundry; getting our palms read (we are all white witches who will be chased by many men and bare many children); somehow managing to pile all of us onto one motorbike and driving through the clogged and chaotic streets without incident; drinking micheladas and dancing without inhibitions in the kitchen.............. all activites the good housewives of Mexico City surely enjoy.

Mmm mmm - homemade chiles rellenos |

The ladies |
In fact, just this morning - a neighbor told Marina that she could introduce Emily & I to some good single Mexican men (probably because she was so impressed by our scrubbing skills..... we really put our backs into it).

Welcome to the workshop.... |
Hi Ari and Emily,
ReplyDeleteSeeing your pics and reading the descriptions of Mex. City reminds me so much of my time in Ecuador. In fact, our apt. was next to a family that raised pigs. Come Sat. morning at the appointed hour (4am or so) a chosen piggy went to meet his maker. Saturday in Otavalo is the big market day and the town would come alive with activity - you'll see what I mean when you get there. Also, I remember washing clothes on our rooftop just like you are doing in the pics. Gloves are required because the soap is very pure and strong. Seems to me we gringos should utilize our rooftops like they do South of the border all the way down to Patagonia. There is so much useful space on our rooftops going to waste up here in the North latitudes.
Ciao mis amores. Have fun!
